Nightlight: A Parody by The Harvard Lampoon

Okay, it’s time to review a parody. To be honest, I love books like this, and I was excited to read it. This book is called Nightlight: A Parody, and it was published by The Harvard Lampoon in 2009. The Lampoon was founded in 1876 by seven undergraduate students at Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts. It's a humor magazine.

Nightlight is a parody of the original vampire books called Twilight. For those of you who don’t know what Twilight is, it’s a story about an old vampire, who looks like a teen, who falls in love with a human teen girl. The books were extremely popular, and they were adapted into films. Most people have labeled it as a terrible saga, but I disagree for the most part. While the story itself isn’t that great, the writing isn’t bad. I don’t think that Stephenie Meyer is a bad writer by any means. The movies, however, are terrible.

Anyway, Nightlight is a parody of these books. Our main characters in the original books are Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, but in Nightlight they’re known as Edwart Mullen and Bella Goose. Bella moves away from her mother and into her father’s house in Switchblade, Oregon where she receives a U-Haul to drive and her very own bedroom. Wow! In Switchblade, she meets Edwart Mullen, the mysterious boy who Bella swears is a vampire. She also swears every single boy in the school wants to date her.

I found Nightlight to be a hilarious parody of the Twilight saga. However, I feel like you have to appreciate this type of humor to find it funny. It’s extremely silly and over-the-top. Most of the characters are very strange. They really don’t know how to people, especially Bella and Edwart. Bella is convinced that Edwart is a blood sucking vampire while Edwart promises to protect Bella from Sega products. Bella also likes to make slushies in the back of her U-Haul with Kool-Aid and snow. Yes, I just said all that.

If you don’t like comedies, then you aren’t going to like this book. If you get offended easily by someone poking fun at something you enjoy, then you’re not going to like this book. If you haven’t read Twilight, or you don’t know anything about it, then you won’t get most of the jokes, so I recommend at least learning about the story a little before reading this. I didn’t take this book seriously. I simply had fun reading it. Some of the jokes are a little strange, and some fall flat at times, but for the most part, I found it pretty hilarious. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is just looking for something fun to read.
